An exceptional female portrait
Lot 2830
Anonymous, 4th century. Seal (Lead, 19 mm, 3.05 g). Draped bust of a lady to the left, wearing pearl earring and a braid folded back, over her coiffure. Rev. Textile imprint. Unpublished in the standard references. A rare and exceptionally detailed late Roman seal. Good very fine.

From an important collection of Roman and Byzantine seals, tesserae and amulets, formed before 2021.

The portrait of the Roman lady on this seal resembles the imperial portrait of Aelia Flaccilla († 386), the first wife of Theodosius I (379-395). Our seal likely belonged to a noble woman who lived approximate in this time.
